U18 CAN: Nigeria narrowly missed the title; go down 63-62 to Egypt


The Nigeria U18 Women National Team to the 11th FIBA Africa Championship for U18 Women have proved to be a worthy ambassadors as they qualified for the 2011 FIBA World Championship for U19 Women slated for Chile from July 21 through 31.
The Nigerian young ladies coached by the duo of Adewumi Aderemi and Peter Ahmedu though lost in the final of the Africa Championship by 63-62 points to host Egypt they surely prove that they have what it takes to be a winner.
The Nigeria side captained by Ijeoma Uchendu was outstanding in all the games they played in the course of booking a World Championship ticket which is the first by the country at the youth level in Africa women basketball.
The team who did not taste any defeat enroute to the grand finale show-down with host Egypt took a surprise lead from the first quarter to the early part of the fourth quarter in the final match between them and host Egypt who enjoyed great support from its home fans who trooped out enmass.
The gallant Nigerian team is expected back in the country today (Saturday) aboard Egypt Airline through Kano Airport.
Mozambique took the bronze with a 61-48 points victory at the expense of former champion, Mali.
Egyptian Reem Ossama was adjudged the championship best player (MVP), Angola Merciana Dias Fernandes led other players in scoring, Egypt Hagar Mohammed won the highest rebound award while Tunisia Houda Hamrouni won the three point award.
